Nepal begins the Women’s SAFF Championship with a victory

Nepal is off to a winning start in yesterday’s sixth edition of the Women’s SAFF Championship football tournament, which is being held at the Dasharath Stadium in Tripureshwor.

In the opening match, Nepal defeated Bhutan by a score of four goals to zero. Savitra Bhandari and Anita Basnet each scored two goals for Nepal’s national team.

The first half was impacted by heavy precipitation. Savitra scored a goal through Amisha Karki’s assist in the 12th minute of play, giving Nepal the lead.

Prior to that, in the eleventh minute, Hira Kumari Bhujel’s shot from outside the penalty area struck the post and rebounded.

Savitra scored a second goal in the 67th minute to give Nepal a 2-0 lead.

In the 72nd minute of play, Anita scored a goal to give Nepal a 3-0 lead. Then, in the 84th minute, Anita scored a second time, giving Nepal a 4-0 victory. Three Nepalese players, Deepa Shahi, Amisha Karki, and Samiksha Ghimire, made their national team debuts in the match against Bhutan.

With this victory, Nepal earned three points in Group B”s opening match. Bhutan began the competition with a loss.

On August 28, Nepal will play Sri Lanka in the second and final match of the group stage.

This tournament includes Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and the Maldives. The SAFF has split the seven competing teams into two groups. In Group ‘A’, the defending champion India is joined by the Maldives, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Similar to group ‘A’, group ‘B’ consists of Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan.

Following the group stage, the top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals. The championship match will take place on October 3.
